The Migraine Mafia
By: Maia Sepp
Genre: Humor, Contemporary,Women's Fiction
Release Date: December 13th, 2013

On paper, Viive McBroome lives the perfect life--a key player in a fast-paced, technical field, one promotion away from real success--but that's only if you ignore one little problem.

Sandwiched between one migraine and the next, Viive's life is like those choose-your-own-adventure books you read as a kid, only less fun and with a lot more drugs. And lately, as her bosses politely march her toward a vacation that might never end, even the good days feel like a struggle for survival.

Faced with frustration from her loved ones and the dark machinations of a new colleague, Viive feels herself getting pulled under by guilt, apologies, and workplace shenanigans. But then she meets the Migraine Mafia, a quirky, vibrant support group, and her fragile camouflage begins to crumble. She discovers that a room full of strangers just might be able to change the way she views her illness--and realizes that if she doesn't learn to ask for help, her health isn't the only thing she stands to lose.

Sometimes painful, frequently hilarious, always entertaining, The Migraine Mafia is the story of one woman's life-altering decision to thrive in the face of chronic illness.

GUEST POST: My Writing Inspiration by Author Charlotte Pearson- Mummy Fever Book Tour

Guest Post: My Writing Inspiration

By Author Charlotte Pearson

My Writing Inspiration

My three lovely children are my writing inspiration – I starting writing my book as means of documenting some of the funny things they did, or said and the adventures we had along the way. Time passes so quickly and if you blink you feel as if you have missed something sometimes. My children have also been my reason to stay strong, even when I didn’t feel as if I could be at times. One smile, or giggle or funny comment from them and I already felt better! That innocence is really powerful.

I think I was also inspired to write my book because I felt as if there is so much about parenting that we aren’t told. People around us tend to sugar coat it, and for some people I imagine that is quite a dangerous thing. I know someone who had a child before me and she had this perfect image in her head of what it would be like, how she would feel, what the baby would be like and so on- the reality was VERY different from that and she struggled from day one. He child is now eight and she has only just managed to pick herself up and move forwards.

Parenting is hard – babies don’t come with a manual.

I hope my book reveals the truth about some of this – the funny, the emotional, the embarrassing and the truly wonderful aspects of parenting.

My Writing Style

I’d say my writing style is casual. It won’t be what everyone wants to read but it was how I wanted to write. One of the reviews I have had said “I felt as if the writer was telling me her story over a glass of wine” – that was my favourite review because that is exactly how I wanted it to come across. That was most certainly my intention.

Mummy Fever

Mission Accomplished is written in the form of diary entries and by writing in a casual, diary-like style I was more able to convey certain feelings. Love, joy, worry, anger, fear, despair – as well as hint that in many cases there was more to be said that couldn’t be written down.

About Mummy Fever by Charlotte Pearson

Title: Mummy Fever (Mission Accomplished)
Author: Charlotte Pearson
Genre: Contemporary

It was the best of times … It was the worst of times ... 'Mummy Fever: Mission Accomplished' is a determinedly honest blow-by-blow account of young motherhood that will remind you why you vowed never to have a second child, and why you probably broke that vow two years later. Discover how to open a door gracefully to a perfect stranger half-naked and covered head-to-toe in ... well, never mind, how to grow eight arms, how to fend off the hapless and intrusive advice of your rampaging mother-in-law, how to run a marathon only a few months after you have given birth, and how to deal with an inattentive husband who isn't planning on changing his life at all. But, above all, remind yourself that young motherhood is a time of enchantment, despite the very real challenges, and a love story, at least towards the children.

Review: Desert Rice by Angela Scott

Desert Rice
by Angela Scott

Sam and Jacob set forth on a dark journey into the unknown. What they do know, is that for a 12 year old little girl and a 15 year old boy, surviving will be tough. Especially when the their mother lay dead, left behind in the tattered single-wide trailer with empty cupboards, that they once called home. Taking the family car and what few dollars they had, they left West Virginia to find a new life and a new chance at hope, with no actual destination in mind- just far, far away.
Desert Rice book
Desert Rice  by Angela Scott

Sleeping in their car, eating rice and bathing in a truck stop was the least of their worries. They knew they only had a few days before their mother's body was found and they would be the suspects. Determined to never be separated,  Jacob did all he could to protect his sister. Protect her from children and family services, the police that would take them away and lock them up for good, and the deep, dark past- the one that occurred in the single wide trailer with the empty cupboards.

Cutting her hair, covering her body and leading others to believe that Sam was a boy, was the only way Jacob knew to protect his sister. Regardless of how it made her feel, it wouldn't feel as bad as it would if they were separated, or worse- if men noticed that Sam was a young, blossoming girl.

Just as things seemed to be working out, as if they may actually have a chance at survival and making it on their own, tragedy strikes and Sam has no choice to seek help from a stranger whom she recently met. It was the only way, if she didn't get help and get it fast, Jacob would die. But, getting help meant letting someone in to their life, risking them finding out the truth, and risking everything they fought so hard to achieve.

Stephanie's Review of Desert Rice

From the very first sentence, to the very last chapter, Desert Rice was heart-wrenching to say the least. Watching the struggle of two children on the run to save each other and stay together was more than I would have imagined from the simple book cover summary.

I had received a copy of the book from a Goodreads giveaway so it wasn't something I had personally picked out to read. The cover was tempting and the summary was interesting. I cracked the book, read the very first sentence and was hooked! I had to find out more- I had to know why a 12 year old girl was moving her dead mother's body!

Had someone warned me this book would have been this good or that I would have got this emotionally involved I would have never believed them.

Author, Angela Scott, did a fabulous job telling the story as if she herself were 12 years old. The writing, the emotion, the thoughts-  all that went into this story was very real- very believable, making it easier to be drawn into this twisted tale of fate called Desert Rice.

Take a glance at the front cover, of little Sam. Now read the first sentence or two... you won't be able to put it down, I promise!
